A rare and dangerous phenomenon graced the skies of China; known as a “supercell,” this massive formation of highly charged clouds was filmed in the city of Tacheng, located in Xinjiang, northwest of the country. This area has been experiencing severe summer storms this year.

The large circular gray mass impressed and alarmed due to its size and speed. The supercell is potentially very hazardous; it often leads to strong winds, hail, and long-lasting tornadoes.

Supercells are more common in the great plains of the central United States and southern Canada, but occurrences have also been recorded in parts of India, South Africa, eastern Australia, and Europe. In South America, the formation of supercells has been documented in central-eastern Argentina and Uruguay. In Brazil, supercell storms mainly occur in the southern and southeastern regions of the country.
