It was supposed to be a romantic and passionate moment, but it ended up becoming a viral video for the wrong reasons after the girlfriend of a poor Italian boy rejected his public marriage proposal.
More than 13 million people have already watched the post on TikTok on Christmas Eve, showing Valerio and his beloved dancing on Rome’s romantic Via Condotti to the sound of a beautiful serenade performed by a local tenor. Suddenly, the boy kneels with an engagement ring in his hands, while people applaud the gesture enthusiastically.
But all the magic quickly falls apart when the girl, in shock, begs her boyfriend to stand up: “I didn’t expect this. I’m not ready. But is that why we came to Rome?” she asks. “Well, @Cartier has a 30-day return policy,” wrote Valerio in the clip’s caption, indicating that there would be no marriage.
Although many internet users felt sorry for Valerio, dozens of people scolded him for proposing in public and even praised the girlfriend for saying no, even in front of so many people. “Public proposals only exist to pressure the woman into saying yes,” wrote one; “I admire the honesty and courage to say no when the public pressures her to say yes! That’s blackmail, and she didn’t fall for it,” said another.
