Cristoforetti starts by putting coffee from a packet into a small container. However, when she tries to drink it, the liquid doesn’t flow down. She then takes a specially designed cup created by researchers from Portland State University, USA, and this time, she can easily savor the drink.

When astronauts are on the International Space Station (ISS), even simple tasks like having coffee can be challenging due to low gravity. In space, they need to use straws and pouches for liquids because fluids simply float in the air. The cup used by the astronaut has a spout, similar to a pitcher, which optimizes capillarity, the physical property of liquids rising or falling in extremely narrow tubes.
