The aerial footage was captured in early September; wildlife videographer Evan Brodsky was on a whale-watching tour when he ended up witnessing thousands of dolphins coming together in a massive group.

Brodsky was able to capture sensational footage of the long-beaked common dolphins grouping together. In his Instagram post, he commented, “On this day, we saw thousands and thousands of dolphins spread out over kilometers! Literally, every splash you see is a dolphin.”

Dolphins are mammals that rely on other dolphins for survival, which is why they form groups; this way, they protect each other from predators, mate, hunt, and have fun.

The size of the group typically ranges from 2 to 30 dolphins, but for short periods of time, ‘super groups’ can form, as seen in the video. This likely occurs when food, i.e., prey, is abundant in a specific area, and after the hunt, dolphins return to their original groups.
