Footage recorded during a Lana Del Rey concert in Mexico City shows a large group of attendees in the audience getting knocked down, domino effect-style, by a mysterious energy wave.

Videos taken by audience members quickly went viral on social media, leaving many wondering what exactly had transpired. Of course, many joked about the incident, suggesting it was probably witchcraft or something similar, but in reality, the event prompted many to seek a logical explanation.

According to G. Keith Still, one of the leading experts in crowd science, the phenomenon that occurred during the singer’s performance is more common than one might think and can be very dangerous. Speaking to The Messenger, he recalled a similar incident at a Travis Scott concert two years ago, where 10 people lost their lives.

“It’s called a progressive crowd collapse, where the momentum of one person bumping into another significantly increases,” he explained.

“I think the term ‘domino effect’ is quite apt. If you stack dominos, one domino can knock down another domino that is one and a half times its size, simply because you’re converting potential energy into kinetic energy. You’re changing the force.”

Thankfully, there were no reports of injuries. For those who frequent events with large crowds, Hill offers some crucial advice: “I think most of the time it all comes down to observing how the venue is laid out, watching where people are moving.

If you’re moving into an area where it seems denser ahead, remember that you might be getting into situations that could be a bit harder to get out of.”
