Mildred Munjanganja is the mother of little Leila Danai, who was 3 and a half years old when this video was recorded; she always prepared the little girl to defend herself against comments that her classmates might make about her hair, as Leila is one of the few black children in her school.

In the video, Leila tells her mother that a boy said he didn’t like her hair: “I said, ‘I like it!’. He said, ‘I don’t like this hair, it’s crazy.’ And I said, ‘My mom made it. And if you don’t like it, I don’t care,’ ” she commented, with a beautiful smile on her face.

“Oh baby! I’m so proud of you,” exclaimed her mother. “You stood up for yourself. What matters is that you like it, it’s your hair.” In the video caption, Munjanganja recounts how happy and proud she was of her daughter: “I’m glad she didn’t need anyone’s validation to feel complete. She knew she loved her hairstyle, and that’s what mattered,” the mother wrote. “I’m so proud of her. At 3.5 years old, she stood up for herself and didn’t let that comment affect her.”
