In the clip, former McDonald’s corporate chef Mike Haracz revealed why the famous fast-food chain doesn’t have onion rings on its menu: “McDonald’s is more profitable when it’s more efficient, and efficiency at scale.”

In response to a follower’s question, the former culinary innovation manager at McDonald’s presented a hypothetical scenario in which the chain starts selling onion rings. “Think about how many fewer people would order french fries and, instead, would order onion rings,” says Haracz.

He explains that it is much more profitable for the fast-food chain to sell only french fries, as they are easier to make, and according to Haracz, McDonald’s is extremely efficient in preparing fries, generating huge profits from them. According to the chef, fewer products lead to more productivity, and thus, more money.

“If they could sell everything the same thing, if McDonald’s could sell one thing and be done with it, it would be great for them, so they actually, especially more recently, have fewer and fewer options,” he said.

Haracz also argued that the chain would likely have to charge a little more for onion rings because they are “not as efficient” to prepare compared to french fries.

“I don’t foresee this happening anytime soon because McDonald’s wants to sell its french fries because they make a lot of money from them,” Haracz said, adding that if onion rings were indeed added, they would probably end up being a limited-edition menu item.

Many in the comments lamented the absence of the delicacy on the menu: “I bet a lot of people would order french fries and onion rings at the same time,” one person said. “I would pay a little extra for onion rings instead of french fries,” wrote another.
