Julie McFadden is a healthcare professional from Los Angeles, USA, who works as a nurse in a palliative care clinic. She uses her social media to demystify and explain some processes and phenomena that occur with terminal patients.
In this video, she addresses a phenomenon that she believes to be a positive and comforting experience for those nearing the end. She explains the phenomenon called “visions,” where a terminal patient starts to see deceased loved ones, believing they are alive, and this tends to happen quite frequently.

“Here’s my most comforting fact about death and dying,” McFadden says in her video made in October 2022. “The craziest thing we see in the clinics is that most people will start to see deceased relatives, deceased friends, deceased pets before they pass away.”
According to the nurse, these visions can occur up to a month before the patient’s death, but unfortunately, there are no clear answers as to why patients might experience this. “We have no idea why this happens,” Julie says. “We’re not claiming that they are really seeing these people. We have no idea.”
McFadden shares that she has been working as a nurse for terminal patients for a long time, and this phenomenon happens all the time. “The vision is quite common, so common, in fact, that clinic staff ‘educate the family and the patient’ in advance that this can happen so that both are prepared and not ‘incredibly alarmed.'”
The nurse believes that these visions are a sign that a patient’s end is near: “It’s usually a good indicator that the person is close to death, typically a month or a few weeks before they pass away. It brings me comfort, I hope it brings comfort to you,” McFadden concludes.
